Peach Season Is Here. It’s Just Playing Hard to Get.

From Spring Branch, peach country begins about an hour northwest, where U.S. 290 threads through Stonewall and Fredericksburg.

The region’s traditional harvest is still one of the sweetest summer rituals in Texas. But a warmer-than-normal winter and a late freeze damaged blossoms at some orchards, creating wildly different results from one farm—and one day—to the next.

That means the best peach trip is no longer about racing to a single famous orchard. It’s a leisurely market crawl with a short list, a cooler in the car and a backup plan involving cobbler.

Why Is Summer Peach Season?

Growers plant varieties with staggered ripening dates, stretching one short harvest into a season that moves from early clingstones to classic freestones and a handful of late-August varieties.

  • May — Clingstone: Bright early fruit with flesh that holds to the pit.
  • June — Semi-free: The transition into the heart of summer.
  • July — Freestone: The easy-slicing peaches most people wait for.
  • August — Late varieties: The limited, weather-dependent finish.

How to Pick a Good Peach

A hand gently checking a ripe peach on a tree

Check the background color

Green should have shifted to cream, warm yellow or gold.

Handle it gently

A ready-to-eat peach yields slightly. Never squeeze the sides.

Use your nose

A ripe peach should smell fragrant near the stem.

Let firm peaches soften on the counter. Refrigerate only after they ripen, and wait to wash them until you’re ready to eat.

No Fresh Peaches? The Trip Is Still Delicious.

Warm peach cobbler with ice cream, cider and preserves

Follow the scent of warm cobbler. Order peach-butter ice cream. Fill the pantry with preserves, salsa and cider. A short crop does not cancel peach season—it simply moves more of it into the kitchen.

Look for: Cobbler · Ice cream · Cold cider · Preserves

Frequently Asked Questions

Can we pick our own peaches in 2026?

No major Gillespie County orchard currently has a dependable, ongoing pick-your-own peach crop. Jenschke Orchards specifically lists peaches as closed for 2026.

Are peaches sold in Fredericksburg always local?

No. Reputable stands may supplement a short local crop with clearly identified fruit from elsewhere. Ask whether the peaches were grown by that orchard or in Gillespie County.

What day should we make the trip?

Thursday through Saturday gives you the best overlap of opening schedules. Leave early, check same-day updates and bring a cooler.

Is there a peach festival still coming in 2026?

The Stonewall Peach JAMboree was held in June. The remaining summer peach experience centers on orchard stands, farm markets and the final Fredericksburg Farmers Market dates.
